Award for Ship Lift at the Three Gorges Dam
Within the scope of the awarding of the Ulrich Finsterwalder Civil Engineering Award 2017, the engineering consortium Krebs + Kiefer and Lahmeyer International was also honoured for the planning of the ship lift at the Three Gorges Dam in China. The 15th award ceremony took place on February 10 in the Ehrensaal of the German Museum in Munich. The jury was chaired by Prof. Dr. Martin Mensinger of TU Munich, and consisted of representatives from industry and science as well as of the Finsterwalder family.
In its explanatory memorandum, the panel stated: “The ship lift with a lifting height of 113 m, and a bearing structure which at the same time is a component of the mechanical facility, is a globally unique structure placing the highest demands on all involved planners. This concerns the interfaces between mechanical engineering and technical equipment, as well as design and dimensioning of the load-bearing components. Due to the extreme accuracy requirements, a spatial model with numerical calculation methods taking into account realistic material laws for the predetermination of the load-bearing structures, became indispensable. The coordination between planning, building material technology, and construction methods was of exceptional importance for the project success. All these challenges have been successfully mastered under the generally demanding conditions of international construction in cooperation with Chinese partners. To sum up, the project is, from the perspective of the jury, exemplary for the performance of engineers from Germany.”
In his speech, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jan Akkermann (Krebs + Kiefer Ingenieure GmbH) mentioned all engineering companies involved in the project: in addition to Lahmeyer International GmbH, IRS Stahlwasserbau Consulting AG, and the former Spezialbau Engineering GmbH (SBE), today Lahmeyer Hydroprojekt GmbH.
